Kids with Autism…

2 Aug

…have the same right to not be bullied as other childern.

Sounds obvious doesn’t it. Apparently it’s not.

“but he winds the other children up”.

I argue that that might be the case but that he doesn’t mean to and that also doesn’t then mean he is fare game for the other children.

Anyway, I find myself going out of my way to look out for him. He responds brilliantly if you explain to him why what he just said or did annoyed people, and help to draw out the unspoken social rule in the situation.

The other children, on the other hand, don’t handle well being pulled up on the comments they make to him; because he’s different, but not so differnt, they do see him as fare game. That has always been the same with children.

But, as far as I’m concerned, the least we can do as the adults in the situation is to try to be understanding of him, help him to negotiate relations with other children and help to create and environment where he is likely to be able to have positive interactions and to also try to help other children to accept him into their play.

Anyway, just some thoughts from the start of second week at playscheme.
