Wages for Housework

29 Jan

Today at East London Print workshop all went to plan.

I think this was helped by the friendly than normal atmosphere. I’d like to thank they guy who I shared a drying rack with. Very considerate.

So, here is a card early for Mothers Day (3rd April 2011) but perfect for any occasion. The image is from a protest in Italy in the 1970s for wages for housework and against violence towards women.

Through all the struggles and victories, it’s still the norm for women to do the majority of the housework and carry the reproductive responsibilities. Women in work often work the double shift; paid work and housework. The definition of what makes useful work is as flawed as ever.

Well, in honour of all those women who have fought and carry on fighting for equality, all those who carry the burden of work with strength and to every job that needs doing without thanks for payment, here’s a card.
